THE WAKKER WEEKLY
Issue #1582 – Posted on: 24-May-2021
We were so happy to see so many of our customers dining in Bushwakker again after the seven week Regina restaurant lockdown. The provincial government gave the green light to Queen City restaurants to resume limited capacity in-house dining starting on May 17th. Although we only have 19 tables for now due to the three meter physical-distancing requirement, we hope Phase One of the Saskatchewan Re-Opening Roadmap Plan will move ahead as planned and on Monday, May 31st we will be able to add more tables to our dining area. Fingers crossed! Keep up the good work everyone and thanks for your support!
Limited reservations are accepted as late as 6:00 PM. Please give Cheryl a call at 306-359-7276 to book your three meter physically-distanced table.

As we continue to celebrate our 30 years of operation we reflect on some of the Bushwakker beers which have stood the test of time. Another Bushwakker brew which started off as a seasonal beer and quickly became a year round offering is our SODBUSTER BROWN ALE. This particular beer was introduced by our first brewer, Scott Robertson (son of the late Bushwakker co-founder, Bev Robertson) in the early-1990’s. At that time, we felt our classic Palliser Porter needed another fellow English Ale. One which was malt accented but contained less of the powerful roasty aromas and flavours found in our famous porter. Porter Lite? No, that would have been too much of a stretch! Our Sodbuster Brown Ale is a traditional Northern English Brown Ale. It possesses a toffee-like, caramel character and a medium-dry finish. Some hop character is indeed present to balance the malt but the dominate feature of our Brown Ale’s palate is most certainly the complex malt flavours. Many insist they can detect a gently bitter, dark chocolate finish. A few years ago, we made an error in judgment and decided to return our beloved Sodbuster to its original “seasonal” status. This decision was quickly reversed after a protest broke out and many emails of apology were sent to a legion of disgruntled Bushwakker beer fans. Bushwakker floor manager, Cheryl Tovey, has noted that the Bushwakker blend called Red & Black (a mix of Dungarvon Irish Red Ale and Palliser Porter) makes for a suitable substitute if there is no Sodbuster Brown Ale to be found. She credits our second Bushwakker brewer, the late Brant Ross, with making this discovery. We will endeavor to ensure our extremely food-friendly Sodbuster Brown Ale will always be there for Cheryl and for you!

We appreciate your business very much! Due to our greatly reduced seating capacity, we ask that customers limit their dining time so as many people as possible can comfortably enjoy our Real Saskatchewan Brewpub Experience, especially if we have a line-up! Thank you for your co-operation and support.
We are very appreciative of the considerable increase in the number of our takeout food orders. Every little bit helps during these challenging times. Because we do not have many tables to spare for customers to use while they wait for their takeout orders, we kindly ask you place your orders ahead of time by calling us at 306-359-7276 so that we can have your order ready upon your arrival. We have added additional waiting spaces in our back common area. Just stand on a red “X” and we will bring your takeout order to you as soon as it is ready. We also can provide curbside pickup. Just let us know when you will be arriving at out back door and we’ll run it out to you.
We ask that our customers do not alter the position of our tables. We are required by the Saskatchewan Health Authority to have our tables placed three meters apart. We have measured the correct spacing so that we can maximize the numbers of tables present while complying with this health order. Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.
Reservations are accepted and encouraged. We accept limited reservations as late as 6:00 PM from Monday to Saturday. Call at 306-359-7276 to secure your table. Please note under the current provincial guidelines the maximum number of people who can be seated at the same table is limited to four. Larger reservations must occupy more than one table and maintain three meters of physical distancing between each table. These measures should loosen up as the province enters into Phase One of the 2021 Reopening Roadmap Plan which is targeted for May 30th.
Please continue to practice safe health and social distancing practices. Remain connected to one another and to us! In addition to this weekly newsletter, we are very active on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Check-in with us often as we navigate these continually evolving times together. Try to support local businesses whenever possible. Be vigilant in your resolve to protect yourselves which in turn will protect others. Please don’t let your guard DOWN so the province can open back UP!
N.B. Brewery Hopes to Lure Islanders with Promise of Potato Beer
Nicola MacLeod · CBC News
The P.E.I. Wit beer was originally brewed last summer, but Holy Whale is reviving the recipe in anticipation of the return of the Atlantic bubble in April.
Peter and Jeff Grandy wanted to do something special when the Atlantic bubble opened last summer.
The brothers are originally from P.E.I. and are now the owners and operators of Holy Whale Brewery in New Brunswick. It has locations in Riverview and just outside of Fundy National Park in Alma.
They decided to brew a special beer for every province. Now with the bubble scheduled to reopen, they are reviving the P.E.I.-themed beer in hopes of luring Islanders to the mainland.
It is, of course, a beer brewed with P.E.I. potatoes.
“It’s kind of a goofy beer, but at the same time, the potatoes do add a little bit of a dimension,” said Jeff Grandy.
“It’s very starchy and sugary, so it does ferment and makes it a little bit more crisp.”
A taste of home
The P.E.I. beer is a traditional wheat beer with potatoes added to the mash.
The 2020 bubble beers also included a Nova Scotia blueberry beer and a rhubarb beer for New Brunswick. The original plan was to brew a bakeapple beer for Newfoundland and Labrador, but there were shipping complications.
Grandy said the idea for the spud beer came after a conversation with an Islander friend.
“He said, ‘Just whatever you do, do not do a potato beer,’ and then I said, ‘I think we have to,'” Grandy laughed.
“We thought we would do something unique, that would kind of cheesily resonate with folks from each province.”
He said the hope is to get Islanders to explore different parts of New Brunswick and not just to stop at big box stores in Moncton. Grandy said the potential loss of the tourism season last year made them fearful, just like many businesses.
“We sort of are off the beaten path,” he said, referring to the location on the Fundy coastline. “August, September, we heavily rely on Quebecers and Ontarians that do come.”
Grandy said things worked out overall. There was a shortage of visitors to Alma, but the business in Riverview picked up and the numbers were comparable to the prior year.
“We were largely unaffected,” he said. “We did have to shift from a lot of in-house consumption in our Alma location to takeaway products.”
Like many in Atlantic Canada, the Holy Whale team has connections and family across Atlantic Canada and look forward to the bubble opening.
“We’re only three hours away from Charlottetown,” Grandy said of their seaside brewery, which is in a renovated church.
TIME OUT
All drugs have two names, a trade name and generic name.
Example, the trade name is Tylenol and its generic name is Acetaminophen… Aleve is also called Naproxen.
Amoxil is also called Amoxicillin and Advil is also called Ibuprofen.
The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra.
After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin.
Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.
Pfizer Corp. announced today that Viagra will soon be available in liquid form, and will be marketed by Pepsi Cola as a power beverage suitable for use as a mixer..
It will now be possible for a man to literally pour himself a stiff one.
Obviously we can no longer call this a soft drink, and it gives new meaning to the names of ‘cocktails’, ‘highballs’ and just a good old-fashioned ‘stiff drink’.
Pepsi will market the new concoction by the name of: MOUNT & DO.
Thought for the day: There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer’s research.
This means that by 2025, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.
