NEWS FROM THE BREWERY! Head brewer, Michael Gaetz, reports our seasonally available GREAT NORTHERN GRAPEFRUIT RADLER, CHICO LIGHT SESSION IPA, CYCLONE BARLEY WINE, BUSHVAR CZECH PILS and SUMMER WHEAT are currently on tap. There are also batches of HONEY THISTLE WITBIER, KAI’S MUNICH HELLES, RASPBERRY WHEAT and GRANNY’S BITTER working their way through the brewery.

Our August Premium White Wine Feature is Boatshed Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. The Premium Red Wine Feature is Enchanted Tree Shiraz from South Australia. Both are $8.95 for a glass and $23.95 for a half litre.

Our GUEST TAP is currently pouring a DOUBLE IPA from Swift Current’s Black Bridge Brewery. Next up is a CITRUS WIT from Saskatoon’s Paddock Wood brewery. This will be followed by the MIDSUMMER’S NEIPA DREAM from Saskatoon’s High Key Brewing.

THE BUSHWAKKER GOODNESS IS SPREADING!  ALL SIX REGINA SLGA stores are now offering a varied selection of Bushwakker beers in 650 ml bottles. The Quance street SLGA store is also offering growler fills of our number one selling DUNGARVON IRISH RED ALE. Regina’s Urban Cellars east location and Metro Liquor also offer a selection of our bottled beers.

The Bushwakker Writers Corner local featured author is Malcolm Bucholtz. He is a Regina resident who has been making beer, wine and mead for over 30 years. In 2014, he completed the General Certificate in Distilling from the UK-based Institute for Brewing and Distilling (IBD) which propelled him headlong into the world of distilled spirits. Malcolm has gained a reputation in Canada for teaching distillery courses, and for assisting start-up craft distilleries with business plan development, recipe formulation, and contract distilling services. He is currently completing his M.Sc. in Brewing & Distilling at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. His thesis project is a study of Saskatchewan-grown purple wheat and its potential for use as a raw material to make both wheat beer as well as distilled alcohol.

His latest book is the 4th edition of Field to Flask is a must read for anyone with an interest in distilled beverage alcohols. Starting with a look at the history of alcoholic beverages and the legal definitions of spirit types, this 4th Edition of Field to Flask goes on to explore the legislation that governs craft distilling in Canada, the UK and the USA as well as the complex science behind mashing, fermenting, distilling and oak ageing of alcoholic spirits. This edition also examines marketing strategies for gaining market attention as a small distiller, the manufacturing of alcoholic beverages by commercial distilleries, and wraps up with recipe ideas to stimulate the imagination of both the hobbyist and potential licensed craft distiller alike.

BUSHWAKKER EVENTS

Aug. 2: FIRST FIRKIN FRIDAY. Enjoy the pomp and circumstance of this longstanding Bushwakker monthly tradition! A piper from The Regina Police Services Pipes & Drums leads a small keg (the firkin) throughout the pub in a procession. A guest volunteer tapper is selected to wield the handmade wooden maul affectionately named, The Mighty Firkin Wakker, and attempt to tap the keg in one swift blow! This month’s firkin offering will be a SNEAK PEEK RASPBERRY WHEAT. The suds-soaking spectacular takes place at 5:30 PM.

Aug. 2, 3 & 4: FOOD DAY CANADA 2019. We will once again participate in this national celebration of our local bounty. It is an opportunity for Canadian chefs to showcase their skills by creating delicious dishes utilizing fresh ingredients which are locally sourced. Bushwakker executive chef, Mike Monette, will offer XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX all weekend long.

Aug. 24: MOTHERWELL “BARNSTORMER” RED FIFE WITBIER RELEASE. The Bushwakker is pleased to once again be a proud partner with Parks Canada and the Regina Symphony Orchestra this summer and will brew a new Motherwell Homestead commemorative wheat beer! The Motherwell “Barnstormer” Red Fife Witbier incorporates the historic Red Fife wheat as well as some special ingredients which will impart plenty of delicious “barnyard earthy, grassy funk” into the brew!

Aug. 26: Monday Night Jazz & Blues. CALL ME MILDY pumps out melodic blues rock with a dash of reggae. 8:00 PM.

Unibroue Celebrates 25 Years of La Fin du Monde

Editor’s Note: We are delighted to see this significant milestone reached by a fellow Canadian brewer. This was one of the first beers we featured on our Exotic Guest Beer Menu back in the early 1990’s. Nice to see this flagship beer receive some well-deserved attention. While shiny and new beer offerings keep the craft beer world interesting, one should always revisit the brews which served as inspiration for many of us to delve into craft beer in the first place!

Unibroue in Quebec, Canada is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its most popular brews this month. La Fin du Monde is a Belgian Tripel that “has won 55 medals and honors from top international competitions, including 13 platinum distinctions and 29 golds at prestigious events such as the Chicago Beverage Testing Institute’s World Beer Championships and the World Beer Awards,” according to a release from the brewery.

A scintillating brew that emits an inviting aroma of spice, honey, coriander and malt, this 9.5 percent ABV brew is available wherever Unibroue beers are sold. The full release from the brewery is below:

North America – The renowned La Fin du Monde, Unibroue’s flagship Tripel ale, celebrates its 25th year with the distinction of being the most awarded beer in Canada.

To date, it has won 55 medals and honors from top international competitions, including 13 platinum distinctions and 29 golds at prestigious events such as the Chicago Beverage Testing Institute’s World Beer Championships and the World Beer Awards.

First brewed in February 1994, it took 18 months of research before La Fin du Monde saw the light of day. Representative of a style that was originally developed by medieval monks for special occasions, it is a premium beer with a surprising finesse, brewed and refermented in the bottle – a first in the American market at the time of launch. True to tradition, Unibroue brewed this beer in honor of the French explorers who, when they discovered North America, believed they had reached “the end of the world.”

“La Fin du Monde is our flagship brand” says Jerry Vietz, Brewmaster for Unibroue. “With this beer alone, we have won 55 international medals, including 2 prestigious awards at the World Beer Awards in London, England, where it received the title of ‘World’s Best Belgian Style Tripel.’”

La Fin du Monde pours a hazy golden hue with a cloudlike halo of creamy white foam sealing in a floral bouquet mixed with notes of fresh baguette, spice, honey, coriander, malt and alcohol warmth.

Every sip greets the palate with a harmonious mélange of coriander, candied orange peel, lemon, black pepper and bananas, framed by a subtly spicy hop backbone and alcohol warmth. Truly a perfect balance of sugar, acidity, bitterness, spice and alcohol. Like good wine, La Fin du Monde’s flavors develop with age, becoming smoother over time, revealing notes of honey and candied fruit and developing a more assertive and lasting flavor. This phenomenon is known as “maderization” and is similar to the aging process of dessert wines like port.

To age, store bottles upright in a cool dark place at a stable temperature between 46°F and 61°F. The yeast added to each La Fin du Monde bottle triggers natural fermentation, consuming excess oxygen and preventing the beer’s CO2 from oxidizing. This bottle fermentation combined with the higher alcohol content in La Fin du Monde act as natural preservatives, ensuring you can enjoy it for years to come.

This lady found out her dog could hardly hear so she took it to the veterinarian. He found that the problem was hair in its ears. He cleaned both ears and the dog could hear fine. The vet then proceeded to tell the lady that if she wanted to keep this from recurring she should go to the store and get some “Nair” hair remover and rub it in the dog’s ears once a month.
The lady goes to the drug store and gets some “Nair” hair remover.
At the register the druggist tells her, “If you’re going to use this under your arms don’t use deodorant for a few days.”
The lady says: “I’m not using it under my arms.”
The druggist says: “If you’re using it on your legs don’t shave for a couple of days.”
The lady says: “I’m not using it on my legs either; if you must know, I’m using it on my schnauzer.”
The druggist says: “Stay off your bicycle for at least a week.”
