NEWS FROM THE BREWERY! Head brewer, Michael Gaetz, reports our seasonally available PREMIUM PALE ALE, TWO SON’S MILK STOUT, BARON BOCK, PICKARD’S OATMEAL STOUT, and UPENDI PASSIONFRUIT PINEAPPLE BLONDE ALE are currently on tap. There are also batches of BOMBAY IPA and BUSHVAR CZECH PILS working their way through the brewery.

Our GUEST TAP is pouring the Raspberry Brewleé from Saskatoon’s High Key Brewing. Next up is a small keg of SCBA STOUT which is the third annual collaborative brew created by the 15 member breweries of the Saskatchewan Craft Brewers Association.

Our May Premium Wine Features are from New Zealand. The white is a Sauvignon Blanc from the Riverlore Winery and the red is a Pinot Noir from the Matua Winery.

THE BUSHWAKKER GOODNESS IS SPREADING! Regina’s Quance Street SLGA Store now offers six Bushwakker beer brands. The North Albert SLGA now offers four different brands and the Broadway location has two Bushwakker brands. 650 ml glass bottles of our number one selling DUNGARVON IRISH RED ALE are currently available at ALL SIX REGINA SLGA stores. It is also now available at Urban Cellars in Regina. Regina’s Metro Liquor will soon offer growler fills and bottles of our UPENDI PASSIONFRUIT PINEAPPLE BLONDE ALE.  ATTENTION SASKATOON RESIDENTS! You can find our Dungarvon bottles in the Saskatoon Metro Liquor store!

The BUSHWAKKER LOCAL ARTIST WALL for the month of May features the works PATTI SHAW. Her artist biography is as follows:

Although I’m Ontario born, I feel like I’m from Saskatchewan. I’ve lived here for three quarters of my life. I now reside in Weyburn, Saskatchewan where I’ve raised my three beautiful children. I use my art on canvas as an outlet to express how I’m feeling with what I envision. Sometimes some of my pieces may seem a little unusual but that’s what makes my artwork unique. I’ve an unusual way of coming up with my ideas for my pieces, I dream them than hurry to write them down when I wake. I use the images from my dreams and create. I thoroughly enjoy how my paintings come to life as the change from start to finish. My love of art spans from a life-time of visual images of everywhere my eyes can see and not see through my crazy imagination. I’ve always loved how I can focus on something and see the various colours and tones in any given object or piece of scenery.

As for my future thoughts for my pieces, I have also started sculpting with various clays. I’m enjoying what’s developing. I will continue my eclectic paintings still but will always search for new knowledge in different mediums to bring forth many more to come.

May 11: BIG BREW DAY. The ALES Club and the Bushwakker Brewpub continue this longstanding tradition of celebrating craft beer at the grassroots level. Members of the club join Bushwakker head brewer, Michael Gaetz, and assistant brewer, Bradley Dalrymple, in brewing a special high gravity Belgian Quadrupel!

May 13: Monday Night Jazz & Blues. KEITH BOMPHRAY & FRIENDS. Great jazz standards receive a few fun twists from this talented trio. 8:00 PM.

May 15: Wednesday Night Folk. RON LOOS. Talented guitar plucker with an off-centred sense of humour. 8:00 PM.

May 16: SCIENCE PUB – International Year of the Periodic Table! Don’t miss the final installment of the wildly popular Science Pub Series’ seventh season! Enjoy lectures on scientific topics of general interest in our Arizona Room (main floor banquet room) over beer and snacks. The room opens at 5:00 PM and quite often is full by 6:00 PM. Avoid disappointment and come down early for dinner and a pint before the presentation which begins at 7:00 PM. This month’s lecture will be presented by Dr. Brian Sterenberg from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Regina. 150 years ago, Russian chemist, Dmitri Mendeleev, proposed the first true periodic table of the elements. Since then, the periodic table has become the most important tool for understanding chemistry. In this talk, Dr. Sterenberg will discuss the origin and organization of the periodic table and also highlight the properties and application of some of the elements.

May 17- 20: MAY LONG WEEKEND KEG EVENT. What better way to celebrate the year’s first warm long weekend than with a Bushwakker keg? Receive free ice, cups, coasters and the use of a keg chiller tub with any May long weekend keg order. Four sizes of kegs are available for any gathering big or small.

May 18: ANNUAL SCREAMIN’ MOSQUITO CHILI BEER RELEASE. Our hot pepper-infused blonde ale makes its annual return this weekend. We have partnered with local businessman Tony Matharu at the India Food Centre in Regina to provide us with fresh spicy peppers. Hurts so good!

May 18: THE POET LAUREATE’S 4TH ANNUAL POETRY & A PINT PRESENTATION. The Saskatchewan Poet Laureate Program was the first provincial program of its kind in Canada. The Saskatchewan Arts Board, partners in the program, which is under the patronage of the Lieutenant Governor. Enjoy a Saturday afternoon of poetry readings from some of Regina and area’s established and up-and-coming writers including: Bruce Rice (Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan), Carol Rose GoldenEagle, Judith Krause, Medrie Purdham, James Trettwer and Michael Trussler. Perhaps enjoy a slice of our special limited edition Saskatoon Berry Cheesecake Poetry Dessert! 3:00 PM.

BeerAdvocate Shuts Down Print Magazine

BeerAdvocate has announced that it has canceled its print magazine after 11 years of publishing. Debuting in 2007, the magazine was produced monthly until last year when it attempted to transition to quarterly. The last print edition of BeerAdvocate, Issue 133, released in the summer of 2018.

BeerAdvocate magazine joins  DRAFT Magazine and All About Beer Magazine as beer publications that have folded over the past three years.

Similarly, in 2015, The Beer Connoisseur canceled its bi-monthly print magazine then transitioned to a premium web magazine before adding its new annual print edition this year.

In April, 2019, BeerAdvocate sent an email to its subscribers explaining the reason for the cancelation:

“It’s no secret that the media world has experienced rapid change over the last few years. The truth is the media landscape has long been defined by change, including the niche occupied by beer periodicals like our own BeerAdvocate magazine. And change, while painful at times, can often be a positive. As with many businesses, that quick pace of change creates risk. In January 2018, we changed the format and frequency of our magazine from a 72-page monthly to a 112-page quarterly. There were a number of sound reasons for the switch, and we were optimistic at the time about the future of our print publication, which has featured award-winning writing and beautiful art and photography over the course of its history. But the frequency and format change was not enough to overcome some of the larger trends in the market, and as you have undoubtedly noticed by now, we unfortunately weren’t able to fulfill our subscription obligations last year. So, as much as it pains us to make this announcement, we’ve decided that the best course of action is to discontinue the print edition of BeerAdvocate magazine.”

Founded in 1996 by Jason and Todd Alström, “BeerAdvocate (BA) is an independent community of enthusiasts and professionals dedicated to supporting and promoting better beer,” according to BA’s website. The site “remains solely owned and operated by Jason and Todd Alström, with awesome support from their co-workers and volunteer staff.”

One of the major focuses of BA has been beer festivals, which is expected to continue despite the end of its print magazine. According to the site, “since the Art of Beer Festival in 2003, BeerAdvocate has continued to organize popular festivals and events every year. From social gatherings to charity fundraisers, online tastings to larger ticketed festivals, BA events provide the beer community numerous opportunities to sample, socialize, and learn more about beer while directly supporting the industry.”

The end of BeerAdvocate’s print magazine marks a significant turning point for beer media in the United States. There now exist no independent, consumer-focused magazines in print for the beer industry. While Craft Beer & Brewing, Brew Your Own and Zymurgy are still publishing print magazines, those publications are primarily focused on homebrewing rather than the industry at large.

Though BeerAdvocate is ending its print magazine, the site is extending a free one-year membership to subscribers to its Respect Beer Society, “which entitles users to more than a dozen awesome perks, from beta testing our app, to discounts, advertising-free browsing, extended users stats, and much more.”

Furthermore, BeerAdvocate magazine Issue 134 will be made available to subscribers as a PDF in April. For those that are still owed BA magazine copies past Issue 134, Craft Beer & Brewing will fulfill those subscriptions.

TIME OUT

Tommy is a young boy, just potty trained. When he goes to the bathroom though, Tommy manages to hit everything but the toilet. So his mom has to go in and clean up after him. After two weeks, she has had enough, and takes Tommy to the doctor.

After the examination, the doctor said, “His unit is too small. An old wives’ tale is to give him two slices of toast each morning, and his unit will grow so he can hold it and aim straight.”

The next morning Tommy jumped out of bed and ran downstairs to the kitchen. There on the table, are twelve slices of toast.

“Mom!” Tommy yells. “The doctor said I only had to eat two slices of toast.”

“I know.” said his mother. “The other ten are for your father.”
