Regina businesses hopeful for wrap on construction projects before winter

Crews race to finish two major Regina street projects before the snow falls. Wayne Mantyka has the details.
Crews are working down to the wire to compete two Regina street projects – one on Dewdney Avenue and the other in the city’s downtown. Business owners who have been significantly impacted by closures over the summer hope work is completed before the snow flies.
The Quality Inn and Suites in downtown Regina has been in the midst of a construction zone for the past two summers. It’s owner says the impact has been felt.
“There’s been three delays so far. We’re told middle of November but once that’s done, I’m just back out and working hard to get our clientele back,” Scott Nicholson explained.
The city is revitalizing 11th Avenue through a four-year project that began last year. The Sweet Chaperone Café Corner has reported a significant decline in business as its surrounded by construction fences and barricades.
“I mean the traffic is going down, the foot traffic, especially this year because they closed even the sidewalk,” owner Leony Lantayona.
The city still expects to finish the eastern portion of 11th Avenue downtown before the snow flies. It also expects to complete work on Dewdney Avenue in the warehouse district – which was closed all summer.
Bushwakker Brewpub is looking forward to the completion of construction.
“For months and months and months we’ve been looking at big holes and piles of dirt and lots of concrete and now we’ve got the new asphalt in place and the beautiful streetlights that are up and the centre boulevard and the paving stones.” Grant Frew, bar manager at Bushwakker Brewpub, told CTV News.
Customers seem to be pleased with Dewdney Avenue’s new look.
“This was always, maybe not the best-looking street in the city, and especially for how busy it is and the [number] of storefronts that are up and down the street but just now, even today this chunk is finished. Looks fantastic,” Andrew Sawatsky told CTV News.
“It’s been a little dicey,” another customer, Luke Shaheen, explained. “We’ve been using the back door a few times and, but you know what, it’s great to see the businesses continue to thrive here and we’re near the end. It’s almost done.”
Businesses and customers will eventually be able to look beyond the inconveniences experienced over the past year or two as completion of the projects make for a more inviting downtown and warehouse district.
TIME OUT
Many years ago during my married days, I accidentally overturned my golf cart.
Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out: “Are you okay? What’s your name?”
“It’s John, and I’m okay, thanks,” I replied as I pulled myself out of the twisted cart.
“John,” she said, (firm loose breasts undulating beneath her white silky robe) “forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while and I’ll help you get the cart up later.”
“That’s mighty nice of you,” I answered, “but I don’t think my wife would like it.”
“Oh, come on now,” Elizabeth insisted.
She was so very pretty, very, very, sexy and very persuasive … I was weak. “Well okay,” I finally agreed but thought to myself, “my wife won’t like it.”
After a couple of restorative Scotch and waters, I thanked Elizabeth. “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset. So I’d best go now.”
“Don’t be silly!” Elizabeth said with a smile, letting her robe fall open slightly. “She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?”
“Still under the cart, I guess.”
