Bushwakker head brewer, Michael Gaetz, reports our seasonally available TREPHINATION IMPERIAL IPA , LEMON RASPBERRY ALE, CYCLONE BALREYWINE (keg is really low), BREW & GOLD DORTMUNTER EXPORT LAGER and GALAXY S.M.A.S.H. ALE (final keg getting low) are currently available. There are also batches of KAI’S MUNICH HELLES, LAPHROAIG SINGLE MALT SCOTCH & OAK-INFUSED ROBUST PORTER, DOUBLE HONEY RED ALE, 30th ANNIVERSARY BLACKBERRY MEAD and MORK’S MEAD (think waaaaaay back) currently working their way through the brewery.

 

We recently re-released one of the most powerful and complex Bushwakker beers in our 33-year history! Our TREPHINATION IMPERIAL IPA is all about big hops, big malt and stealthy alcohol. New hopping techniques were utilized in the brewing of this particular batch. We think you will be just as pleased with it as we are. It was quite appropriate to have our label designer, Gavin de Lint, model the labels which depict his own image. Now available on tap and in our offsale. Hopheads rejoice!

Aug. 30, 31 & Sept. 1: LABOUR DAY CLASSIC THREE DAY BURGER BATTLE. We open at noon on the football Sunday! This decades long tradition returns! We once again welcome our many Manitoba friends who return to Mosaic stadium to watch their beloved Blue & Gold get their licks from the Green & White before the favour is returned at The Banjo Bowl. The Labour Day Classic Weekend is the only opportunity of the entire year where football burger fans can show their support for their team by choosing their namesake burger. History has shown on a number of occasions that the burger which sells the best prior to the game is a strong indicator as to which team will win the Labour Day Classic. Will it be the Rider Burger or the Bomber Burger? May the best burger win!

Sept. 4: MONTHLY ALES HOMEBREWING CLUB MEETING. After a two month summer break, one of the country’s top ranked homebrewing clubs is set to reconvene for another exciting brewing season. The September meeting is historically the largest meeting of the year and sees many new homebrewers dropping by to see what the club is all about. This month’s presentation topic is a bit unconventional because the focus will be on CIDERS! If you are interested in getting into the art of home brewing or would like to improve your skills, come to the Bushwakker basement clubroom at 7:00 PM and discover what the ALES Club can offer you. New members are always welcome!

Sept. 4: Wednesday Folk Night. THE BEACHSIDE ROMEOS. A special end-of-summer performance featuring Beach Rock, Reggae and Country Beach tunes. 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM.

Sept. 6: FIRST FIRKIN FRIDAY. Much thanks to Tourism Regina for helping us spread the FFF word at their new kiosk at The Regina International Airport! Enjoy the pomp and circumstance of this longstanding Bushwakker monthly tradition! A piper from The Regina Police Services Pipes & Drums leads a keg (the firkin) of special ale throughout the pub in a procession. A guest volunteer tapper is selected to wield the handmade wooden maul affectionately named, The Mighty Firkin Wakker, and attempts to tap the keg in one mighty blow! This month’s super end of summer firkin offering will be a MANDERINA BAVARIA DRY-HOPPED BREW & GOLD DORTMUNDER EXPORT LAGER! The name says it all and the suds-soaking spectacular takes place at 5:30 PM.

Motion to Rename Dewdney Voted Down

Some residents in Regina have expressed their frustration over the rejection of renaming Dewdney Avenue by city council Wednesday.

Some within the Indigenous community said they feel this is a step backwards in the reconciliation process.

“It feels like it’s turning their back on the Indigenous community,” said Joely BigEagle-Kequahtooway, the co-founder of the Buffalo People Arts Institute.

A name change for the avenue that runs from one side of Regina to the other, east to west, was shot down by council 7-3.

“Discovering Dewdney’s legacy, it’s horrific. For some reason, Regina wants to hold onto this legacy,” said BigEagle-Kequahtooway.

BigEagle-Kequahtooway has been fighting to have the roadway be re-named for the last eight years and feels indifferent about council’s decision.

“We have a letter from reconciliation Regina. We have support over 600 signatures from this community. So I’m not sure who the mayor and council are listening to in terms of their idea of what reconciliation looks like,” she said.

Mayor Sandra Masters believes money that could have went into re-naming a street could be better utilized in other areas.

“Fundamentally, I think that I can’t get there in to renaming a street thinking that’s going to solve the problems. I think if you invest in youth programs or you, I don’t know, knock down the burnt out properties, that’s a way better spent money I think in terms of uplifting and having an impact on how people feel about their city,” she said.

Bushwakker Brewpub has been operating in Regina along Dewdney Avenue since the early 1990’s. An employee with the pub agreed now is not the time to invest in changing the name.

“The additional expense at this time would make things even more difficult. So I think if a decision was made for a name change and enough time was given where we could prepare and allocate resources to accommodate that change, then that would be much easier for us to deal with,” said Grant Frew, Bar and Marketing Manager with Bushwakker Brewpub.

BigEagle-Kequahtooway said she will not stop fighting to have the roadway be renamed. She recommends there be a cost benefit analysis be done as well as an educational campaign, another step towards reconciliation.
