Enjoy Bushwakker beer on tap every Thursday night at The MacKenzie Art Gallery this summer! The Candahar is one of their most interactive installations to date. Created by Winnipeg-based artist, Theo Sims, this replica of a Belfast pub complete with Bushwakker beer on tap will whisk you away from the queen city to 1990’s Ireland. This week’s local celebrity guest bartender on August 4th will be Regina Folk Festival artistic director, Sandra Butel.

The Bushwakker will once again be participating and Bushwakker Executive Chef, Mike Monette, has sourced some fresh local bounty to create a special dish which will be very delicious and truly Saskatchewan! Our 2016 Food Day Canada feature will be Bacon Wrapped Bison Meatloaf sourced from Quill Creek Bison served with fresh veggies from The Regina Farmer’s Market. Chef Mike has also found some wonderful Saskatoonberries from Rocky Acre Orchard in Lipton, Saskatchewan and will offer a Saskatoon Berry Tart dessert feature.

These wonderfully weird and beautifully bitter brews feature uncommon ingredients or brewing methods. Coffee-infused, fruit-infused, barrel-aged, kettle-soured, rye & honey-infused and even an imperial black milk IPA aged in scotch oak barrels! Plenty of door prizes too. Aug. 5: FIRST FIRKIN FRIDAY. Enjoy the pomp and circumstance of this longstanding Bushwakker tradition as a small keg of special ceremonial beer is paraded throughout the pub lead by a piper from The Regina Police Pipes & Drums. A volunteer is selected to tap the firkin quite often with suds-soaking results. We hear rumblings from the brewery that this firkin will be dark and hoppy with a pleasing twist! 5:30 PM.

Aug. 8: Monday Night Jazz & Blues. TERRAPLANE. Regina’s friendliest bluesman, Shane Reoch, brings his family band and a Bushwakker bassist too! 9:00 PM.

Aug. 19: MOTHERWELL RED FIFE WITBIER FIRKIN PREVIEW. The Bushwakker is a proud partner of Parks Canada this summer and has been asked to once again brew our extremely popular Motherwell Homestead commemorative brew, as part of  Parks Canada’s 2016 celebrations. Motherwell Red Fife Witbier, utilizes the historic Red Fife wheat in its production. This special Belgian-style wheat beer will be officially released at The Symphony Under The Sky event which will be held at the Motherwell Homestead on Saturday, August 27. Motherwell Homestead interpreters will be at the Bushwakker for a special Firkin Preview tapping of this refreshing commissioned brew on August 19 at 5:30. They will be wearing period dress and will briefly describe the big Motherwell Threshing Day/SUTS Grand Event. Don’t miss this opportunity to have an advance taste of this historic brew before it is officially unveiled later.

Aug. 27: MOTHERWELL HOMESTEAD SYMPHONY UNDER THE SKY MOTHERWELL WITBIER 2016 OFFICIAL LAUNCH. Last year’s event was a roaring success and something to make all of us proud. On a day that traditionally sees 300 visitors to the site, over 2500 people came out to experience the unique and exciting combination of a symphony performance, the unveiling of the Bushwakker commemorative Motherwell Red Fife Witbier with special participation from the Motherwell Family, fly-past from the Royal Canadian Air Force, food and craft vendors, children’s activities, animals, and traditional farming and food preparation demonstrations. It was a highly successful event with hundreds of people telling organizers they had never experienced a day of activities so new and wonderful! We sold out of our witbier just before the event finished last year but we will take even more in 2016. Don’t miss this amazing afternoon of Saskatchewan culture and heritage!

Alastair Bland: Craft Beer is Diverse, But Not The Brewers

For all the praised diversity of the craft beer universe, there is one element, at least, that is extraordinarily homogenous: the brewers. They’re virtually all white men.Historians tell us that, in ancient Europe, women made the beer. Beer is brewed on a stove using other cooking equipment, and so making beer became — or always was — just another task of the woman-dominated kitchen. And it wasn’t just Caucasian women who brewed. Throughout Africa and Asia, people have fermented fruits, honey, sorghum, millet, rice and wheat into alcoholic beverages for ages.

But now, as craft beer continues to explode into one of the most impressively successful cottage-to-kingdom industries, almost every brewery is owned and operated by white men.There are a few notable exceptions. Locally, Denise Jones made the beer at Moylan’s Brewing Co. in Novato until 2013, when she took a job at Napa Point Brewing Co. She now works in Germany. In Oakland, beer enthusiast and brewer Melissa Myers owns Good Hop Bottle Shop. Myers collaborated recently on a rye Kölsch with Marin Brewing’s Arne Johnson. In Napa County, the Carneros Brewing Co. is owned by a Mexican-American family. At the BJ’s Restaurants group, brewer Michael Ferguson is a black man. And Garrett Oliver, also black, is the brewer at Brooklyn Brewing Co.

In San Diego, Japanese-American Yiga Miyashiro is a brewer with Saint Archer Brewery in San Diego. In March, Shmaltz Brewing Company released a triple IPA made by a team of female brewers in celebration of International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day, on March 8. (Please don’t bite me if I didn’t mention a few, which I certainly did.)As for the racial disparity, economics may have something to do with it, according to Santa Rosa beer writer Mario Rubio, author of the blog Brewed for Thought.

“Poor minority-dominated neighborhoods tend to continue down the path that they’ve been set on for generations,” Rubio says, and craft beer, he notes, is not generally present on this path.“College-educated, middle- to upper-class Americans” — not minority groups — tend to consume and brew the most craft beer, says Rubio, who is of Mexican, Apache and Belgian roots.

Miyashiro talked to me about this, too, and he succinctly observed, “For the most part, you’ve got a bunch of white guys with beards making beer.”The barrel-chested lumberjack type with a huge Grizzly Adams beard, nerding out over an IPA or shoveling barley, is a cliché by now, but there’s a dose of reality in the image. At the next beer tasting you attend, look around. You’ll see.

The lack of women and racial minorities in the craft beer culture is enough to make me sometimes want to duck my head and run to the wine aisle when I go shopping for something to drink. For there they are, the obligatory 20- to 30-something white folks with patchy skinny black jeans, hoodies and beards, eyeing the rows of 22-ounce bottles and researching new releases on their mobile beer review apps.Beer has been a staple of life in many cultures for thousands of years, and it is very peculiar how that has so dramatically changed in the past decades. I discussed this in late 2013 with Frederick Douglas Opie, food historian at Babson College in Massachusetts. He was baffled by the lack of diversity in beer making.

Opie observed that artisan brewing has a long history in many western and central African cultures.“So, why that discontinues in America after the Atlantic slave trade, I don’t know,” Opie told me. “It could be that beer is like a lot of things in the food industry which, as they grow popular, become very hip, yuppie and white.”


Fred Soofi

Many of our readers will remember Fred Soofi, an Iranian immigrant who arrived penniless in Regina many years ago. Regina was more homogeneous back then and new immigrants were a rarity. Regina’s Mayor at the time, Henry Baker, helped Fred get a job as a dishwasher in a local restaurant in the old City Hall, long gone. Fifteen years after he arrived Fred owned Old City Hall. When Fred left Regina he was the owner of three Regina restaurants, one, the Cathedral Freehouse, as a co-owner with my wife and I.

Fred moved to Coquitlam B. C., where he has expanded into more restaurants and he has added hotels to his business ventures. He is now developing a non-profit 55 unit residence for seniors. While he lived in Regina he was known for his free Christmas dinner for the homeless. The story of Fred’s journey from penniless immigrant to head chef, restaurateur, successful developer and humanitarian is filled with many great sub-stories along the way. I like to tell American supporters of Donald Drumpf (His father later changed his name to Trump) these stories; how one immigrant from an Islamic country made Canada so much richer.  One of those stories is about Fred’s first attempt at cooking. A cook at that restaurant where he worked as a dishwasher didn’t show up for work one morning. The head chef told Fred that he should drop the dishwashing for a while and help out my making the toast. Toast, and how to make it, is not well known in Iran. Fred buttered the toast before putting it in the toaster and filled the kitchen with smoke.



Ma was in the kitchen fiddlin’ around when she hollers out… “Pa you need to fix the outhouse!”

Pa replies, “there ain’t nuthin’ wrong with the outhouse.”Ma yells back, “Yes there is now git out there and fix it.”

So… Pa moseys out to the outhouse, look’s around and yell’s back, ” there ain’t nuthin’ wrong with the outhouse!”Ma replies “Stick your head in the hole!”

Pa yell’s back “I ain’t sticking my head in that hole!”Ma says “ya have to stick your head in the hole to see what to fix.”

So with that, pa sticks his head in the hole and looks around and yells back, “Ma there ain’t nuthin’ wrong with this outhouse!”Ma hollers back, ” now take your head out of the hole!”

Pa proceeds to pull his head out of the hole, then starts yelling, ” Ma! Help! My beard is stuck in the cracks in the toilet seat!”To which ma replies, “Hurts, don’t it?!”
