This pub talk will be presented by Dr. Renata Raina-Fulton who is a Professor and Department Head of the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department at the University of Regina. Tracking the Decline in Air Quality in Rural Areas of Saskatchewan due to the Wildfires. Air Quality was heavily impacted by wildfires in 2025 throughout many areas of Saskatchewan. Dr. Raina-fulton’s research studies movement of contaminants ranging from pesticides to wildfire contaminants in air and linkages to the role of contaminants play in honey bee decline in the prairies. This talk will focus on the first results on particle concentrations in the air at some rural monitoring sites in high canola, wheat, and honey production areas of the province including near Regina. Highlighted will be the frequency of these wildfires events and areas that experienced rapid decline in poor air quality based on measurements throughout spring-fall 2025. An overview of our sampling approaches and future steps along with our current stage of development of a new approach for in-hive monitoring of contaminants will be discussed.
